Sponsorship
There are two different processes for sponsoring your family. One
process is used for sponsoring your spouse, conjugal or common-law
partner and/or dependent children. Another process is used to sponsor
other eligible relatives.
To be considered a
“Family Class” Applicant one must be the Canadian Sponsor's:
-
spouse or your
common-law or conjugal partner
-
dependent
child or a dependent child of your spouse, common-law or
conjugal partner and under 22 years of age on the day he or she becomes a
permanent resident dependent child or a dependent child of your
spouse, common-law or conjugal partner and 22 years of age or
over on the day he or she becomes a permanent resident
-
any other
person, e.g., your father, your mother, your grandparents or a
dependent child of your parents
-
Also included
in family class are children under 18 who are orphaned and whom
the Sponsor intends to adopt. This is a particularly difficult
procedure for those living within countries where the concept of
adoption is unknown
-
Finally, where
the Sponsor has no relative as listed above in Canada and no
other relatives who are Canadian citizens or Canadian permanent
residents, he or she may sponsor one other relative, whomever
that is to join them in Canada. This is for the benefit of the
Canadian citizen, and not to benefit a single family member left
outside of Canada when all of the members of one family are in
Canada
The sponsor must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident; at least
19 years old; physically residing in Canada (or able to demonstrate an
intention to reside in Canada by the time the sponsored family member
lands in Canada) not in prison; not bankrupt; and not under a removal
(deportation) order if a permanent resident, Also the sponsor must have
the ability to provide financial support for the Applicant and his/her
dependents for a certain period of time
